CRICKET

Crickets are a common pest around homes and are often found hiding in dark, damp areas where they can stay protected during the day. Outdoors, they frequently live in irrigation boxes, water meter boxes, expansion joints and wall voids, just above the weep screed at the base of the foundation. One common sign of crickets in a wall is the appearance of small piles of droppings that resemble coffee grounds on the concrete along the foundation of the house. While crickets themselves are mostly a nuisance, they are important to control because they are a major food source for scorpions, which is one reason scorpion activity often increases when cricket populations are high. Crickets are also able to throw their chirping sound, meaning the noise may seem like it is coming from your yard even when the insects are actually on a neighboring property. In rare cases, crickets may nest inside attics if moisture is present, sometimes due to issues like a leaking air conditioning drip pan or small roof leak. Because they thrive in moist, sheltered areas, reducing moisture and maintaining regular pest control treatments can help keep cricket populations under control.
